Casting a French film about an iconic, ethnically mixed, French author, Alexandre Dumas with an iconic, white, French actor, Gerard Depardieu, is off-putting – at least to North Americans. On both sides of the Atlantic ocean, we face awkward questions about color, "race," and passing for mixed in French film. What better way to commemorate Bastille Day, France's national holiday?

The University of Texas at Austin is asking itself whether to change the name of one of its dormitories. It memorializes a former Klansman, William S. Simkins'. In looking at Mr. Simkins' case, some reporters have compared him to the late Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who also subscribed to the Klan's ideology in his youth, but changed later. But when do we look forward toward unity, rather than in reverse and toward division and anger?

"Winter's Bone" is the refreshing story of a tough 17-year-old broad in the Ozarks, Ree Dolly, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Her story amounts to an odyssey as she locks horns with her rural, often criminal neighbors and family. Her dad, Jessup, put their house up as collateral for his bond when he was put in jail on drug charges for making meth. With his court date imminent and himself missing, Ree, hearty and hardened beyond her years, is saddled with fixing this.

If you love film, and use the word cinema, seldom do you watch a film that exceeds your standards so that it reminds you of why you love films. "The Secret in their Eyes" is exceptional. Incidentally, it earned the 2010 Oscar for best foreign film. While the Oscars have acknowledged too few great talents, it's a delight that it found "Secret." Here's why.
